Making a Washing Machine More Energy Efficient

Saving energy with your washing machine is easier than you think!

Saving money where you can is always good, in good times and bad. It is the wise thing to do! Laundry machines make up a significant percentage of your energy bill, up to 10%, according to Consumer Reports. It is worth saving here where you can without compromising the quality of your clothing. Here are a few ways to make a washing machine more energy efficient.

Choose a Great Washing Machine

Start with a great washing machine. A bad appliance will always be less efficient than you desire. If possible, ensure that you have a top-rate washing machine with a good Energy Star rating. If you would like some recommendations and an installer to go with them, Landers Appliance can help you out in the Baltimore area.

Do Full Loads

Putting only one or two items in your large-capacity washing machine and running a full cycle is a waste of energy. On the other hand, doing a full load of laundry without overstuffing the machine will maximize its functionality.

Select the Right Cycle

Should you do a smaller load, be sure to select the cycle for smaller loads. Selecting the right wash cycle overall will yield better results. The better you know your laundry cycles, the better results you can get every time.

Use the Appropriate Detergent

If you have a high-efficiency washing machine, be sure to use a high-efficiency laundry detergent. Using the wrong laundry detergent can be detrimental to your clothing and be a waste for your washing machine.

Use Cold Water When You Can

Setting the water temperature to cold will cut down your heating bill. It is also good to wash some clothing in cold water. On the other hand, it is best to use hot water for towels, bedding, oily and greasy items, and some contaminated items.

Clean the Machine

Washing machines can get dirty, too. They can even start smelling funny! Periodically, it is a good idea to run white vinegar and baking soda through an empty washing machine on a hot cycle and to wipe down the door if it is a front-loader.
